What does Wellness mean to you?
It is defined in many different ways and its ultimately about what works for you. No rules, just finding what provides your optimal well being.
The second Saturday of June is Global Wellness Day. Global Wellness Day is an entirely not-for-profit day, a social project dedicated to living well. The purpose of Global Wellness Day is to ask the question, even if for just one day, “How can I live a healthier and better life?”, to direct the thoughts of both individuals and society towards “living well” and to raise awareness.
The main aims of Global Wellness Day are:
- To recognize the value of our lives
- To pause and think, even if for just one day of the year
- To be free from the stress of everyday city life and bad habits
- To make peace with ourselves
- To raise awareness about living well and increase motivation, not just for today, but for the remaining 364 days of the year
Global Wellness Day provides a comprehensive definition of Wellness.
Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices towards a healthy and fulfilling life. It is more than being free from illness, it is a dynamic process of change and growth. A good or satisfactory condition of existence; a state characterized by health, happiness, and prosperity; welfare.
“Wellness is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” – The World Health Organization.
According to several studies, the most common health problem in the world is depression. This problem is often manifested in the form of insomnia, stress, poor nutrition, physical inactivity, obesity, and heart disease, etc.
The National Wellness.org defines wellness as: "Wellness is an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence."
Madeleine Spencer from MadeleineLoves.com writes in the Huffington Post defining wellness as "I personally consider it to mean constructing a life that tends to my emotional, mental, and physical health."
