Why I Created a Yoga Mat Spray (And Why Scent Matters More Than You Think)

Posted by Laura Colucci on

Someone recently commented on our Instagram account..."Yoga Mat Spray, now I've seen it all FFS!"

Obviously this took us my surprise. I thought this was quite a basic product. As a yoga teacher, I created the yoga mat spray because there’s something deeply comforting about stepping onto a clean mat. It sets the tone before you even begin like arriving in your own little sanctuary.

I also wanted it to do more than just clean. By adding aromatherapy, the spray helps calm the mind and settle the nervous system. Scent has a powerful way of grounding you, and over time you start to associate that fragrance with your practice space. It becomes familiar  like a cue to arrive, breathe, and drop in.

And of course, it’s hygienic too. Spraying your mat after practice helps remove sweat, bacteria, and everyday germs, so you’re not carrying them from one session to the next.

For me, it works beautifully as part of a ritual and in the same way that a yoga mat spray helps you begin your practice, an aromatherapy eye pillow helps you close it. Using it at the end of a session becomes a signal to the body and mind: we’re done now. It marks the transition from movement to stillness, and helps you leave the practice feeling complete.
