Summer Hack: Tips to Keep Your Cut Herbs Fresh

By Laura Colucci, Founder of Spritz Wellness

If you've planted a herb garden, now is the perfect time to cut the herbs to keep on hand in the kitchen or preserve them for the autumn. Here are some simple tips to keep cut herbs alive and fresh for as long as possible.

Herbs need water to stay fresh. Fill a jar or glass with clean water and place the cut herbs in it. Ensure that the stems are submerged in water but the leaves are not. Before placing the herbs in water, trim the ends of the stems at a slight angle.

Find a suitable spot for your herb arrangement. Ideally, it should be a cool area, as excessive heat can cause the herbs to wilt quickly, perhaps a window ledge.

It's recommended to replace the water every two to three days. Before adding fresh water, trim the stems again to ensure proper water absorption.

If you notice the leaves drying out, you can mist them lightly with water using a spray bottle.

If you're growing mint, lemongrass or chamomile, they're lovely additions to a homemade iced tea, or worth drying to keep on hand alongside our herbal tea collection for a summer of natural, botanical rituals.
