What Is a Sound Bath? A Beginner's Guide to Sound Healing

A sound bath is a deeply restful form of meditation where you are bathed in sound rather than water. Here is what happens, and how to try one at home.

By Laura Colucci, Founder of Spritz Wellness

The name can be a little misleading, because there is no water involved at all. A sound bath is a meditative experience where you lie back, close your eyes and let waves of sound wash over you, usually from gongs, singing bowls, chimes and the human voice. There is nothing to do and nowhere to be. You simply listen, and let the sound carry your attention away from the busyness of the day.

What Actually Happens in a Sound Bath

You will usually be invited to lie down, though you can sit if you prefer, and get as comfortable as possible. An instructor then plays a series of instruments, letting the notes overlap and resonate. The continuous, gentle sound gives the mind something soft to rest on, which for many people makes it far easier to switch off than a silent meditation. Most people describe it as floaty, calming and surprisingly restorative.

The Comforts That Make It Deeper

A sound bath is all about feeling safe enough to let go, so comfort matters more than anything. How you set up depends on whether you are sitting or lying down.

Seated Meditation
  • A lavender eye mask to block the light
  • An upright, supported spine for easy breathing
  • A cushion or blanket under the hips
  • A room mist to set a calm scene
Lying Down
  • An eye pillow for gentle, calming weight
  • A wheat bag over the chest or belly to ground you
  • A blanket for warmth as the body slows
  • Fully supported, like a deep savasana

That grounded feeling is worth chasing. When you lie down, resting a gently weighted wheat bag over the chest or the belly gives the body something reassuring to settle into, and it pairs beautifully with the slow, natural breathing a sound bath encourages.

How to Create a Sound Bath at Home

You do not need a studio to begin. Find a recorded sound bath online, dim the lights, silence your phone and lie down somewhere warm. Set the scene with a calming mist, cover your eyes, ground yourself with a wheat bag, and give yourself twenty minutes to simply listen. These few comforts are what turn a recording into a genuine ritual.
