Is ‘Self-Care’ Just Basic Care? A Reflection for International Self-Care Day

Posted on

Today marks International Self-Care Day a day that encourages us to pause and “take care of ourselves.” But what does self-care actually mean in 2025? Has it become an empty catchphrase for doing the bare minimum?

At its core, self-care is defined as the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health. But in reality, much of what we label as “self-care” is simply tending to basic human needs: brushing your teeth, having a shower, getting enough sleep. These are necessities, not luxuries — fundamental acts that keep us alive and functional. So why do we celebrate a day to remind ourselves to do what should be daily non-negotiables?

At Spritz Wellness, we believe in moving beyond the watered-down version of self-care. Our ethos is rooted in the idea of creating daily rituals of wellbeing. These are intentional practices that nourish the mind, body and spirit — not just keeping us ticking over, but helping us to thrive.

Daily yoga, taking time to stretch and breathe, sipping a calming herbal tea in the evening, practicing mindfulness, running a warm bath infused with essential oils, taking a moment to pause between meetings to reconnect with your breath — these are small, deliberate acts that elevate everyday life.

So, perhaps the real question isn’t whether self-care is overused, but whether we’ve lost touch with what it can be. True self-care is not simply hygiene or survival — it’s an ongoing commitment to treat ourselves with care and respect, so we can show up as our best selves for the people and world around us.

Today, instead of a token gesture, we invite you to think of one ritual you can weave into your day — not just for today, but for every day. One small moment to restore, replenish and realign. That is where wellbeing begins.

Spritz Wellness: Beyond self-care — we believe in daily rituals of wellbeing.
