We’ve all been there: mindlessly scrolling through social media or refreshing emails for that tiny hit of dopamine. But relying on screens for mood boosts can leave us drained and distracted.
There are healthier, more fulfilling ways to spark joy and motivation. Try these science-backed alternatives:
Move Your Body
A brisk walk, yoga, run, lift weights, Pilates or even gentle stretching releases endorphins and dopamine. Exercise doesn’t have to be intense—just get your blood flowing. Not my favourite, but meant to boost dopamine, try a cold shower.
Create Something (Anything!)
Experience something new. Doodle, bake, journal, or rearrange your bookshelf. The act of making something—no matter how small—triggers a sense of accomplishment and a dopamine rush.
Connect IRL
Face-to-face chats, hugs, a pet increase oxytocin and dopamine. Call a friend for a walk or share a meal without phones on the table! Or try to just sit in silence.
Learn a new skill
Practice a guitar chord, or memorise a fun fact. Small wins train your brain to crave growth, not just notifications.
Embrace “Dopamine Dosing” in Nature
Sunlight on the face, fresh air, and green spaces naturally elevate mood. Try cloud-watching, gardening, or simply sipping coffee outside.
Finally, pair these with a dopamine “detox” by silencing notifications for an hour. Your brain will thank you—and you might just rediscover the joy of offline moments.
