Why Spritz Wellness Uses Pure Essential Oils in Our Candles — And Why It Matters

Posted by Laura Colucci on

At Spritz Wellness, our mission is rooted in supporting wellbeing through natural wellness products that nurture your mind, body, and environment. One of the places where this shows up strongly is in our candles. Every Spritz Wellness candle is crafted with pure essential oils, never synthetic fragrance oils.

Below, I’ll explain what makes essential oils special, the risks and disadvantages associated with synthetic fragrance candles, and how choosing essential oils aligns with our values — plus what you, the user, gain when you go natural.

What Makes Essential Oils Special

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts. They retain the natural properties of botanicals — flowers, herbs, roots, leaves — through distillation or cold pressing, so you get more than just a scent. With essential oils, the aroma becomes a wellness tool. Lavender for relaxation and sleep quality, eucalyptus for clear breathing and mental clarity, peppermint for uplifting mood, etc.

Here’s what defines them:

  • Natural plant source: no synthetic chemicals or artificial aroma compounds.

  • Therapeutic potential: many essential oils impart benefits beyond smell — calming effects, supporting emotional balance, etc.

  • Eco-conscious values: when sourced responsibly and paired with clean waxes and wicks, essential oils offer a more sustainable, less toxic fragrance experience.

Disadvantages / Risks of Synthetic Fragrance Candles

Candles scented with synthetic fragrance oils are common — they often promise strong scents, wide variety of fragrance profiles, cost advantages, etc. But they come with trade-offs. Here are some drawbacks to watch out for:

  1. Potential for irritants and harmful chemicals
Many synthetic fragrance oils are made using compounds that may include phthalates, parabens or other chemicals. These can cause skin irritation, respiratory issues, and may act as hormone disruptors.

  2. Indoor air quality concerns
When synthetic candles burn, they can emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter (soot, smoke). Some of these emissions may be unpleasant or harmful, especially for people with allergies, asthma or chemical sensitivities.

  3. Lack of therapeutic aromatherapy effects
Synthetic fragrances are designed to mimic scents; they don’t carry the natural plant chemistry of essential oils. That means you lose out on the holistic benefits (relaxation, mood influence, etc.) that come with pure plant extracts.

  4. Environmental and sustainability issues
Synthetic fragrance ingredients are often petroleum-derived, may involve non-renewable resources, and might not biodegrade. There can also be concerns with how the raw materials are sourced and the environmental footprint of chemical manufacturing.

  5. Variability in scent experience
Synthetic candles might have strong “cold throw” (how they smell when not lit) or strong marketing around scent, but sometimes weaker “hot throw” (how they smell when burning). Also, synthetic scents might mask over burn imperfections, soot etc., rather than truly uplift the user experience.

How Spritz Wellness Does It Differently

Here’s how we address those issues — and what you get when you use a Spritz Wellness essential oil candle:

  • 100% natural fragrance: Our candles use pure essential oils, not synthetic fragrance oils. We believe the scent should support wellbeing, not just fill a room.

  • Clean, vegan wax and eco-wick: For example, our Clarity Essential Oil Aromatherapy Candle is a blend of vegan waxes with a vegan cotton & paper eco-wick.

  • Hand-poured, small batch care: This helps us ensure consistency, good burn quality, and purity.

  • Ethical, sustainable sourcing & giving back: Spritz Wellness also ties its product line to environmental stewardship. The Clarity candle donates profits to Surfers Against Sewage; we also collect plastic bottles via Plastic Bank.

What You Gain from Choosing Essential Oil Candles

  • A cleaner breathing environment — fewer harsh chemicals, phthalates, or unwanted synthetic residues.

  • Aromatherapy benefits — using scent as a mood tool: relaxation, calm, grounding, clarity.

  • Enjoyment of natural scent that evolves gently (not overpowering or artificial).

  • Peace of mind that what’s burning in your home aligns with wellness values, sustainability, and safety.

Some Things to Keep in Mind

Using essential oil candles isn’t perfect or without its challenges; transparency matters. Things to watch out for include:

  • Proper wick trimming and burn time: to ensure good scent throw and minimal soot.

  • Ventilation: as with any candle, burning can create some smoke or particulate, so make sure there’s airflow.

  • Quality of essential oils: low-quality or adulterated oils may defeat the purpose.

  • Awareness of sensitivities: “natural” doesn’t mean “no allergies” — some people may still be sensitive to particular essential oils.

Final Thoughts

In a crowded world of candles, many are scented simply to smell nice. At Spritz Wellness, we believe there’s more value in scent than surface appeal — scent should support wellbeing, mindfulness, calm, and clarity. That’s why we always choose pure essential oils over synthetic fragrance.

Your environment, health, and inner peace are worth it — because when what burns in your home is clean, intentional, and kind, it supports you in ways you might only notice with time.
